Surroundings

Workum
Nowadays this former Zuiderzee Haven is a popular tourist attraction in South-West Friesland. Workum is one of the Frisian Eleven and has city rights since 1399. The distinctive cityscape is characterized by mills, large farms, some old churches, a beautiful town hall and a modern museum dedicated to the famous Workumer painter Jopie Huisman. As Workum has an important water connection between the Frisian lakes and the IJssel lake, many watersports enthusiasts know to find this place in summer. One of the special events is the so-called Strontrace (Shitrace) during te Workumer Fishingdays in autumn. During this heavy non-stop sailing with traditional sailing ships, bags of fertilizer have to be transported from Workum to the bulb area without the use of a motor. The numerous spectators support the ships to sea.
