Where the Netherlands no longer looks like the Netherlands and the border with Belgium practically runs through the backyard, you will find the Cottessen nature reserve – which belongs to the village of Vijlen – close to the river Geul. Het Hooge Huys is also located in this hamlet, where it is exceptionally pleasant to stay. The holiday home is part of a square-shaped farmhouse with four smaller apartments and is housed in the main house.
The house is fully and comfortably furnished for four to a maximum of ten guests. On the ground floor are the living room with a seating area and wood-burning stove, a dining area, and the kitchen with a spacious refrigerator, two small dishwashers, induction hob and extractor hood, oven, microwave, coffee maker (filter) and Nespresso machine with milk frother. On the upper floors, you will find a total of five bedrooms and three bathrooms.
The terrace at the rear overlooks the breathtaking hilly landscape, and in the distance, the church tower of Sippenaken in Belgium rises above the scenery. Part of the garden is private, while the rest is also accessible to guests of the apartments. In addition to the garden, there is also a lovely terrace on the side of the beautiful courtyard. From here, you look out onto the green grass, the holm oak, and the half-timbered farmhouse.
HistoryHet Hooge Huys is situated in the Geul Valley, surrounded by nothing but peace, space, and stunning nature. Walks and bike rides lead along the Geul, straight through nature with numerous orchards and beautiful vistas, and through villages with old farmhouses, churches, cafes, terraces, and restaurants. Cottessen is nestled between the massive Vijlenerbos forest and the border with Belgium. Part of the Geul Valley is a Natura 2000 area and holds the highest European protection status. Gulpen, Valkenburg, Vaals, Aachen, and Maastricht await within a short distance. The residential section of this farmhouse was built in the 16th century and is characterized by its structure featuring St. Andrew's crosses. Surrounding the magnificent courtyard are, in addition to the main house, the former stables and the barn dating from the 18th century. The property is a national monument and is listed in the 1990 Top 100 of the National Service for Monument Conservation. The entire structure is built partly in the half-timbered style and partly with natural stone (quake stone) from the quarry. The quarry is located approximately 100 meters away. It has been a national monument since 1967. The current owners undertook a major renovation that also opened the former farmhouse to guests.
