History

The history of the Beguinage Gate in Turnhout is linked to the origins of the beguinage itself, which was founded in the 13th century to give women the opportunity to lead a pious life without taking monastic vows. The beguinage gate provided the entrance to this secluded site, which included houses and a church, often surrounded by a wall.
