HistoryTongeren Estate is one of the larger private estates in the Netherlands.
The area of more than 500 ha has an old, small-scale cultural landscape that for the most part consists of forest that is interspersed with heather. Agriculture has an important function. There used to be seven farms; now there is one in operation.
The estate has a long and rich history that goes back to the Tongeren settlement in 1025. Through inheritance, Tongeren was in the possession of the Meester family for several generations at the end of the seventeenth century. Through the marriage of Cornelia de Meester and Jan Hendrik Rauwenhoff in 1762, the property ends up with the Rauwenhoff family. One of the later heirs, Prof. Dr. Lodewijk Willem Ernst Rauwenhoff, and his wife Francina Felicia Tobias placed the property in 1907 in BV Landgoed Tongeren. The current shareholders are all descendants of the Rauwenhoff-Tobias couple.
