The Wad is just a stone's throw away and the city of Groningen is 25 km south. Kantens is the name of the village where the journey is going; a small radial mound with about 700 inhabitants. On the north side of the village, against the flank of the mound and slightly dug in, is the former VADO bus garage. On the street side, the expressionist brick facade stands out. A special holiday home for two awaits behind the facade. Adjacent to the adjacent square and enclosed by the garden.
The built-in interior, fully equipped, can be called contemporary monumental with a nod to the 1930s. On the ground floor you will find an entrance with separate toilet and a large living room adjacent to the kitchen and utility room. The city of Groningen, with shops, terraces, museums, restaurants and bars, is very easy to reach. A supermarket, drugstore and bakery can be found at 4 km. distance in Middlestum. In Westerwijtwerd, the Huiskamercafé is worth a visit and a regional products market can be found on the Ewsum borg. In Onderdendam you can eat well at Restaurant de Molenaar.
HistoryIn 2005 Harry and Marion Haak bought this property with the aim of living and working there. However, it is in a sorry state and the restoration that can make their dream come true will take more than fifteen years. All the more so because the necessary measures must also be taken in view of the earthquakes. The work has now been completed and the fun can begin. The holiday home was in the former bus shed, or the depot. Behind the large entrance doors is a glass front with access. A photo of a tour group from the early 1930s has been projected on it in shades of green, as if it were a modern stained glass painting. With the conversion into a holiday home, history is complete. The former bus depot has itself become a holiday destination.

Vakantiehuis VADO is een juweel. Binnen een oude busremise van het voormalige busbedrijf V.A.D.O. heeft de architect en eigenaar Harry Haak een nieuw huis ingepast. Maar ondanks het nieuwe huis binnen het omhulsel van het oude pand ademt het vakantiehuis nog steeds de sfeer van de oude remise. Zo is de vloer op de begane grond betegeld met oude straatsteentjes, zij het dat er nu een luxe vloerverwarming onder ligt. Daarnaast is de grote poort een soort kunstwerk geworden doordat er op de nieuwe glazen pui een enorm uitvergrote foto geprojecteerd is van een reisgezelschap van jonge mannen en vrouwen uit vervlogen tijden die met de busmaatschappij V.A.D.O. op reis waren. Het hele vakantiehuis is met grote zorgvuldigheid, creativiteit en oog voor het kleinste detail gebouwd. Je raakt niet uitgekeken op de charme van dit huis. De meubels zijn hoogwaardige Nederlandse en Italiaanse design ontwerpen en de keuken en badkamers zijn unieke, zelfontworpen units. De woon- en eetkamer op de begane grond is heel fors van omvang. De zwevende trap brengt je naar de grote open slaapkamer op de bovenverdieping waar een tweede badkamer met douche en wc is ingebouwd. Het grote bed is zeer comfortabel met een hoge instap en onder het bed bevindt zich discrete verlichting met bewegingsmelder voor degene die er 's nachts uit moet. Geniaal bedacht!! Vakantiehuis V.A.D.O. is ideaal voor 2 personen. Het huis biedt alle comfort, het is goed geïsoleerd, constant op comfortabele temperatuur verwarmd en je kunt genieten van de rust die hier heerst. In de omgeving kun je heerlijk fietsen of wandelen. De omliggende dorpen en steden zijn deels heel pittoresk en je vindt hier prachtige oude kerken, veelal uit de 11e tot 14e eeuw en zeer divers in stijl. Maar er is meer te ontdekken. Harry vertelde dat in de provincie Groningen meer Amsterdamse School gebouwen te vinden zijn dan in Amsterdam. Dank je wel, Harry, dat je dit prachtige huis voor vakantiegangers openstelt.
Er gaat niets boven Groningen. Deze prachtige provincie ontdekken kan heel goed met deze accommodatie als uitvalsbasis. Fietsen in het Hogeland, een dagje Groningen. En dan ‘thuis’ komen in dit fantastische vakantiehuis. Mooi gerestaureerd, alles klopt gewoon.
Eigenzinnig en modern ingericht, van alle gemakken voorzien en met vele verwijzingen naar het bijzondere verleden van deze unieke plek. In dit vakantiehuis is werkelijk over elk detail nagedacht. En een prachtige fiets- en wandelomgeving!
