Vinke Wietie
Holiday home for 3 to 4 people
These are the highlights
-
The grapevine in the garden adorns the shed and provides shade for the patio on hot days.
-
It’s not overly luxurious here, as the owners themselves describe it. But it’s certainly comfortable.

One of the wall anchors in this historic little farmhouse bears the date 1791, but its core is even older.
The house still features many historic architectural elements, though you’ll certainly not be without modern comforts. There is a bathroom with a shower, two washbasins and a separate toilet; a modern and stylishly fitted kitchen with a fridge, dishwasher and a wonderfully cosy AGA (some guests come specifically to cook on this stove); and a living room with a wood-burning stove. On the ground floor, there is a single bedroom. The other sleeping areas are upstairs.
On summer days, the garden is the perfect spot. A grapevine adorns the barn and provides shade for the terrace when needed.
Sint-Maria-Horebeke, East Flanders
If you love nature, walking and cycling, you’ve come to the right place here, in the rolling countryside of the Flemish Ardennes. Cycling enthusiasts will also be drawn to the Molenberg – famous for the Tour of Flanders cycling classic. Culture lovers will also find plenty to enjoy here, with Zottegem, Brakel and Oudenaarde all just a stone’s throw away. In Oudenaarde, the Muziekbos is a must-see in spring, as it’s absolutely packed with purple bluebells in April and May. Foodies can enjoy a meal at several cosy eateries in the area, and there are also various museums well worth a visit. Historic Ghent lies 35 km away.
History
One of the wall anchors in this historic little farmhouse bears the date 1791, but the core of the building is even older. Many historic architectural features have been beautifully preserved in the house. For example, you’ll still find the old beamed ceilings, old floors (on the ground floor with red and grey fired tiles from Boom), old wooden doors with distinctive knobs for opening and closing them, and the authentic wooden truss in the loft beneath the thatched roof.

A funny name? That’s right. And there’s a funny anecdote to go with it. A certain Pierre-Louis Blommaert (1851–1937, nicknamed Wietie) is said to have, in a moment of youthful recklessness, climbed up the church’s lightning conductor one day to stuff a bit of putty into the beak of the weathercock (nicknamed ‘Vinke’). On windy nights, that little creature would whistle so annoyingly and keep people awake that something really had to be done about it.
