Château de Gaillac

Holiday castle for up to 9 guests

These are the highlights

  • The village of Cajarc has traditionally been a stopping place for pilgrims on the route to Santiago de Compostela.

  • An enclosed and fenced-off private swimming pool is a must.

  • Not suitable for people with walking difficulties or small children.

Château de Gaillac is the remainder of a former grand castle. It consists of a medieval tower, with the living and sleeping quarters accessible from a central stairwell. The three bedrooms and two bathrooms can accommodate at least seven guests. The kitchen is equipped with every possible convenience and the living room is cosily furnished.

There is also a closed and fenced private pool.

Surroundings

Château de Gaillac is located in a hamlet on the Lot River, about 3 kms from the touristy and lively village of Cajarc. The area is hilly and is ideal for hiking. Larger towns nearby are Figeac and Villefranche de Rouergue.

History

Few details are known about the history of this castle, although it is certain that its current shape is a remnant from a large castle dating back to the Middle Ages.

Willem en Addy Hollander

Even before Addy and Willem Hollander started their B&B in Drenthe (Het Blauwe Schaop), they bought a complex comprising several buildings in their beloved Lot region and – on the principle that one thing leads to another – this castle too, whose current form is a remnant of a large medieval castle.

Saint-Cirq-Lapopie is often cited as the most beautiful village in the whole of France — and quite rightly so, as it literally clings to the cliffs above the River Lot.

The rivers around Cajarc are among the most beautiful canoeing areas in the south of France. You’ll paddle past limestone cliffs, small beaches and almost deserted villages.

One of the most beautiful spots is the panoramic viewpoint over the Célé Valley (parts of the pilgrimage route also pass through here). The landscape is rugged, quiet and serene.
