This wonderful B&B, which is located in one of the most beautiful and characteristic buildings in the village of Veenhuizen, offers four comfortable, luxurious rooms. They are all different - the comfort room is slightly smaller than the three deluxe rooms - but without exception attractively furnished, with comfortable beds, a private bathroom and coffee and tea making facilities.
The breakfast is organic and consists of local products as much as possible. There is yogurt, homemade granola, freshly squeezed orange juice, unlimited coffee/tea, fresh bread, croissants and local cheeses. All these goodies are served in the garden room, which has a beautiful view of the park-like garden, where deer also like to hang out.
The owner is also a massage therapist. If you would like to enjoy a massage during your stay, it can be booked in advance.
Surroundings
Veenhuizen was the sixth Colony of Benevolence since 1823. After 36 years, the colony was transferred to the Ministry of the Interior and Veenhuizen became a 'prison village'. It is located in the middle of nature, which is characterized by long forest avenues - various nature reserves are nearby. From your B&B you can walk straight into the Fochteloërveen nature park. You can choose from several beautiful restaurants in the area, while Groningen is more than half an hour away and Assen is fifteen minutes away.
History
After the government purchased Veenhuizen in 1859, this stately home was the first to be built for the director of the prisons. Because of its similarity to Soestdijk Palace, the house was mockingly called 'Klein Soestdijk'. The village has been 'freely accessible' since 1984 and the building is no longer used as the director's house. It was privately owned for a number of years but fell into disrepair. The Drenthe Landscape Foundation purchased it in 2008, with the intention of restoring it and preserving it for future generations. The building was thoroughly renovated in 2011 and since 2021 the building has been used as a Bed&Breakfast, where you will be wonderfully pampered by owners Tamara & WIllem.

Tamara and Willem both lived and worked in the west of the country. Their desire for a change of scenery brought them to Drenthe, where they now manage both the Oud Bergveen Steam Cotton Mill and Klein Soestdijk – Klein Soestdijk has also become their home. They consider it a privilege to welcome such a diverse range of guests here.
