Vledderhof

At the historic Vledderhof Estate – close to the Drents Friese Wold – you can enjoy a unique stay in the house’s only suite. Equally unique is the opportunity to combine your stay with a ride in an open-top classic car, complete with a luxury picnic to take with you on the journey, available to order.

The guest accommodation comprises several rooms. The sitting room features an open fire and offers a stunning view of the back garden, where roe deer can sometimes be seen grazing. A 200-year-old pulpit staircase leads to the luxurious bathroom, which is fitted with a rain shower and a separate bath. The bedroom is situated at the front of the house and features a regal box-spring bed.

In addition to the Bed & Breakfast, guests can hire an open-top classic car for one or more days. The estate’s barn houses no fewer than three magnificent examples, from which guests can choose on the spot. A well-stocked picnic basket is included as standard.

The hunting lodge, located on the same estate, is set up to accommodate 2 to 4 guests.

Vledder, Drenthe

On the estate, which is also home to a herd of Scottish Highland cattle, you can enjoy lovely walks and take in the unique and varied landscape. The stately avenues and inviting footpaths wind through varied woodland and beautifully situated cultivated fields dotted with several pools and small ponds. The Vledderhof Estate forms part of a vast nature reserve that is part of the Drents Friese Wold, which together covers over 5,000 hectares of countryside. From the small country road just outside the village of Vledder, fields alternate with woods that conceal every sign of life. In Havelte (20 km away) there is a beautiful 18-hole golf course.

History

Weathered lion heads at their posts mark the start of the driveway that winds its way through the ancient oaks to the Vledderhof. The estate was established here around 1740 and has since been fully restored. The current country house was built in 1875, whilst its predecessor dates back as far as 1734. The estate’s character is enhanced by the beautiful avenue lined with American oaks and rhododendrons. Less common tree species such as sweet chestnut, sweet cherry, wild cherry and the exotic Cryptomeria are also found here, as is a multitude of amphibians and reptiles. The pools and ditches are home to salamanders, whilst the large numbers of frogs in the area are preyed upon by grass snakes. At least 85 species of breeding birds call this place home – in particular, species that favour old-growth forests (tawny owl, lesser spotted woodpecker, golden oriole, nuthatch and crossbill) are becoming increasingly numerous.
