De Thuiskamer

De Thuiskamer has two guestrooms. Both double rooms have been tastefully decorated, with restored original features where possible. Both rooms have a private bathroom and TV with DVD player, radio / CD player & Wi-Fi. Breakfast can be enjoyed in the cozy living room. Here, guests can also retreat around the fireplace, or enjoy the rustic view of the 12th century St. Piter Church with a book from the library.

De Thuiskamer is also ideal for private dinners from 6 to 12 persons. For dinner, the living room features a large dining table where guests are served a three course meal during the evening. Guests can also order a picnic basket with fresh, healthy and varied food. Anyone wishing to eat nice food, but not having the desire or time to cook, can order one of the six different baskets (breakfast basket, coffee / tea basket, lunch basket, drinks and dinner basket).

Surroundings

Grou is located on the Pik lake and the Princess Margriet canal. This typical water village has grown into an internationally renowned water sports centre (Grou is also called the capital of the Frisian Waterland). It has become a traditon at the St. Piter Festival on February 21 (instead of ‘Sinterklaas’) to include Frisian stories from Dr. Eeltsje Halbertsma: a famous Grou village doctor, poet and writer. The old centre of Grou is a protected townscape. In summer it is all about sailing in Grou. Well known is the GWS-Schouw. The biggest event is undoubtedly the annual ‘Skûtsjesilen’. The first match of the competition for the championship between the14 Skûtsjes of the SKS is traditionally held in Grou. Major attraction closeby is the Alde Feanen area. In 2006 it was regarded as the last National Park, and in early 2007 as a Natura 2000 area. Which means that a natural area is so special that it requires extra protection. Pastures, forests, mudflats and beaches offer ample opportunities for walkers and cyclists. Leeuwarden and Drachten offer urban entertainment in the neighbourhood. There are many restaurants in different price ranges.

History

This beautiful small national monument dates from 1654 and, together with the adjacent Parish house on the Huzebosk, is the oldest house of Grou. At that time the houses belonged to the Dutch Reformed church, and they are directly under the wings of the 12th century St. Piter Church on the Hofsgreft. Since 1860 the churchyard is no longer used as a cemetery. Between the two parish houses is the Gatehouse. In this part of Grou, located right in the centre, you will experience the atmosphere of yesteryear. You can imagine yourself in a completely different environment than in the centre of the busy charming and cozy water recreation village with its many shops. The building, the place and location are unique and had various purposes over the centuries. From March 2011 it provides accommodation to B & B De Thuiskamer.
