Surroundings

Heerlijkheid Loenen is situated near Arnhem and Nijmegen in the village of Loenen. The beautiful country house, with its coach house and orangery, lies on the banks of the River Waal within a vast protected nature reserve. In these stunning surroundings, you can enjoy tranquillity, quality and beauty of the highest order.

History

The origins of the Loenen Estate date back to the Middle Ages, but it was wiped off the face of the earth three times due to war and dyke breaches. Both the house and the parkland date mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. The Huis te Loenen, or Loinen as it is spelt in the archaic form, probably owes its name to its location close to the river: the word ‘Lunen’ or ‘Loenen’ means ‘watercourse’. The castle, built in the late fourteenth or fifteenth century, was generally regarded as the strongest fortress in the Betuwe. The last major restoration took place in 2007 and lasted a full three years.

Inge and Rob regard it as their life’s work to maintain and develop the Loenen National Monument (also known as De Heerlijkheid Loenen) so that it may be preserved for future generations. By staying at the estate – whether for a meeting, a wedding or an overnight stay – you are helping to achieve this. This is because the income generated is spent on the upkeep and further development of the estate, the surrounding countryside and the listed buildings.

Discover all the beautiful things Gelderland has to offer

A walk through the floodplains of the Waal, with a mix of water, dykes, floodplain woods and ever-changing views, is perhaps the most beautiful way to explore the immediate surroundings.

In Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands, it’s lovely to stroll along the River Waal and through the old town, which offers plenty of entertainment and culture.

The small town of Buren, known as ‘Oranjestad’, is charming and historic. With its narrow, old streets, listed buildings and an unmissable link to the Dutch royal family.

The vineyards of Groesbeek are not just a surprising destination for wine lovers. The surroundings have an un-Dutch feel to them.
