In the local dialect, ‘Pottehuuskes’ literally means ‘little houses’, but these are certainly big enough for a longer stay.
Suites, Pottehuuskes - holiday homes with all the trimmings -, a restaurant and a more than warm welcome in an environment of vineyards, the river Maas and breathtaking nature. Which foreign countries are we referring to here? None. Just the Netherlands. Although in a place where abroad is never far away, because in the deep south, but still really just in the Netherlands.
At the Abdijhof you will stay in the shadow of the Abbey Church, in the heart of the "White Town" and you can choose from luxurious two-person hotel apartments and pottehuuskes. The latter in particular are very suitable for a longer stay and are equipped for two or four guests. All suites and houses differ from each other in terms of furnishing. But what they have in common is that they are remarkably spacious, comfortable and attractive, with super good beds, air conditioning and WiFi, fully equipped kitchens and bathrooms and each with a private outdoor space. The three suites can be found on the first and second floors of the former kitchen building of the palace complex of the Prince-Abbess and her court. The two independent houses in the old beguinage behind the hotel.
In the former court kitchens of the palace of Prince-Abbess Maria Cunegonda of Saxony, the rattling of pots and pans can now be heard again and you can indulge yourself at the Hofferke kitchens restaurant, which is open for both lunch and dinner. The cuisine is honest and the dishes varied and contemporary.
Surroundings
Whether there is something to do and experience in the vicinity of Abdijhof? Thorn is an experience in itself with its historic white buildings, streets and alleys of Maas boulders and the majestic Abbey Church that towers above everything. And with the wide Maasplassen and the green nature of the River Park Maasvallei as your backyard, there is also no shortage of nature. Thanks to the extensive network of nodes, it is also very easy to explore the area on foot or by bike and before you know it you will be abroad, because Belgium and Germany are nearby. Finally, shopping, sniffing out culture and going out can be done in Maastricht, Roermond (Designer Outlet) or Hasselt in Belgium.
History
Thorn, whose history dates back to the late tenth century, was once a mini-state headed by a princess-abbess. She was assisted by a chapter of fourteen abbey ladies and six canons. Yet Thorn was not a principality but a free imperial lordship under the direct protection of the emperor of the German Empire. As a guest of the Abbey Court you will stay in the former kitchen building of the palace complex of Maria Cunegonda of Saxony, who became Prince-Abbess of Thorn in 1776.
