If you want to experience what it’s like to sleep where history lives, then step inside this historic tobacco shop, in the heart of the fortified town of Heusden, and you’ll find yourself right in the middle of a living history book. The upstairs flat has its own entrance and is charmingly furnished for two, seamlessly blending history with modern comfort. The spacious living room on the first floor overlooks the lively Vismarkt – a view that never gets old! – and you’ll sleep beneath the ancient beams on the second floor, which is accessed via a steep staircase. The bathroom has a rain shower, the toilet is separate, and the kitchen is equipped for you to cook up a tasty meal if you wish.
On the ground floor, the preserved interior of the old tobacconist’s shop is a reminder of the building’s rich history, lending the accommodation a unique, almost timeless atmosphere.
Surroundings
The flat is situated in a listed building dating from 1583, located in the heart of the picturesque fortified town of Heusden on the Meuse. It’s lovely to stroll through the picturesque streets here, past historic buildings and along the ramparts overlooking the Meuse – a boat trip on the river is also highly recommended. There are terraces and pubs, small shops and high-street shops, restaurants and galleries, and the Gouverneurshuis offers a good dose of culture.

Govert and Petra recognised the potential of this special property the moment they first stepped over the threshold. The old tobacconist’s, which had stood empty for years, gave it a unique and authentic character. There was no doubt whatsoever that this had to be preserved. That is why it was restored and made sustainable with great care. The special location, right in the heart of the fortified town and overlooking the market square, made it a natural choice for Govert and Petra to open this place up to guests. ‘Because this is more than just accommodation; it’s truly a special place with a special story.’
