B&B Noll Vrij
2 rooms rented exclusively to a group of up to 4 guests
These are the highlights
-
The history of this farmhouse dates back to 1640, when a certain Mr de Rijck purchased a substantial plot of land here and built two farmhouses on it.
-
Being free of ‘nollen’ symbolises fertility and prosperity. This is because, in the past, nothing could grow in the areas of the polder where ‘nollen’ (small shifting dunes) used to be.
-
The two rooms are let exclusively to groups of up to four people, and families – including those with young children – are more than welcome.
First let's talk about the name of this little paradise: Nollen are drifting dunes and they were a big problem when the De Zijpe polder was only drained in the 17th century. For where nodules were, no crops could grow and the sand was too dry, salty and barren for grass and grains. Free from nollen therefore equals fertility and prosperity and that is exactly what you can expect in this B&B annex holiday home. The B&B is located on one of the oldest roads in the old polder, in the middle of the bulb fields and on a yard of more than 4000 square meters that is bordered by ditches and accessible from the road via a dam.
There are two rooms. The two of them are exclusively rented out to a group of up to four, whereby families - with young children - are also more than welcome. For two people, the realm simply comes here alone and that realm consists of a breakfast table with a very complete kitchen, shower, separate toilet and living room with interactive TV and well-stocked bookcase. The bedrooms are on the upper floor: one with a double box spring and one with two single beds (senior height and extra long).
Noll Vrij offers a lot of privacy with its own entrance at the front and a private terrace at the rear. In addition to that terrace, there are also plenty of other places in the yard to enjoy in or out of the sun or out of the wind. Finally, bird watchers can indulge themselves in this area and, if desired, they can also draw on the knowledge of passionate bird expert and host Fred.
Surroundings
Beach, dunes and forests are just around the corner. Nearby are nature reserves such as the Zwanewater, the Wildrijk and areas and areas of the Noord-Hollands Landschap such as the Balgzand. A visit to Schagen, Bergen or Alkmaar is highly recommended and a day trip to Texel is also doable.
History
The history of this farmhouse goes back to 1640 when a Mr. de Rijck bought a large piece of land here and built two bell jars on it. Over the years they were regularly occupied by new owners and also renovated or adapted. This bell jar was last used by the current owners in 2002. The purpose of the renovation was to refurbish and strengthen the building in such a way that it can last another 100 years. Under many layers of wallpaper and hardboard, old wall tiles then appeared in the kitchen. Research has shown that the tiles date from 1750-1780 and come from a tile factory that was located in Alkmaar at the time.

When Fred and Marja began the renovation in 2002, their aim was to refurbish and reinforce the building so that it would last another 100 years. Beneath many layers of wallpaper and hardboard, old wall tiles were discovered in the kitchen. Research into these tiles revealed that they date from 1750–1780 and were produced at a tile factory that was located in Alkmaar at the time.
