Erve Volkerink

B&B for 2

These are the highlights

  • The entire historic front part of this listed property has been converted into a B&B for two.

  • You’ll sleep in a generously sized box bed offering plenty of modern comforts.

  • A ‘Rustpunt’ has been set up at the front of the yard: a place where passers-by can take a break. The gypsy caravan serves drinks, snacks and cake.

When finishing the major and radical restoration, Jenne and Ingrid made the antique front house of their monumental estate available to guests by establishing a wonderful B&B for two. You sleep in a box bed with generous dimensions and modern comfort and there is underfloor heating throughout the house. The bathroom has a large walk-in shower and the living room, which was decorated in the atmosphere of 150 years ago, is also at your disposal. You will find games, books about the area and there is fast internet.

After enjoying the sunset from the garden, you can wait for the starry sky, which is phenomenal in clear weather. If you are lucky you will hear the owls. After a good night's sleep, a breakfast with local products awaits you, after which the next beautiful day in the Vechtdal awaits you.

A rest point has been set up at the front of the yard. This is a place where you can take a break during a cycling route or walking tour. In the gypsy wagon there is coffee, tea, soft drinks, small snacks and sometimes also freshly baked pie or cake. You will also find a charging point for electric bicycles or your telephone and there is a toilet.

Surroundings

All things considered, once you've checked in, you don't have to leave the house. Yet there is plenty to enjoy and do in the area. Culture, entertainment and plenty of gastronomy await in the nearby Hanseatic cities, while the varied nature of the Vechtdal invites you to take action. Within a kilometer of the property you will find river landscape, old ash soil, drifting dunes, forest, heath, raised bogs and fens.

History

Jenne and Ingrid have been the new and very proud owners of Erve Volkerink since 2012. The farm, classified as a national monument, was in need of major maintenance when they bought it. During the restoration that followed, high demands were placed on authenticity and sustainability. Although of course this should not be at the expense of comfort. Trusses and woodwork that were too damaged were therefore replaced with wood rescued from demolished farms in the region. The woodwork in the bathroom of the B&B comes from the B&B's own yard: there was an oak tree in the yard that was sick and had to be cut down for safety reasons. A beautiful bathroom furniture is made from the wood of this oak. The countertop in the old kitchen comes from a farm in a nearby hamlet and has been carefully renovated. The antique tiles with the tulip vases that can now be seen behind the fireplace have been collected from private individuals, thrift stores and flea markets. The woodwork is painted in original colors with linseed oil paint (a natural paint that was also used in the past). This paint is made from the seeds of the flax flower. This is a small blue flower that grew a lot in Overijssel, and is now increasingly cultivated again. The rest of the plant is used to make insulation material. We used this insulation material in the walls of the farm. This way the entire plant is used.

Erve Volkerink (listed as a national monument) has been owned by Jenne and Ingrid since 2012, and they are incredibly proud of it. During the much-needed restoration, they set high standards for authenticity and sustainability on the one hand, and for comfort on the other. Trusses and timberwork that were too badly damaged were therefore replaced with timber salvaged from demolished farmhouses in the region, whilst the wood from a diseased oak tree on their own property was used to craft a beautiful bathroom cabinet. These are striking examples of how things can be done! Or, to quote Jenne and Ingrid: just as it should be.
