De Gevangentoren Suite

1 suite for 2 – high up in the tower

These are the highlights

  • The Westpoort in Vlissingen was built around the year 1491 and consisted of two towers with a gate between them. One of these towers is the Gevangentoren.

  • On a clear day, you can see not only the Knokke skyline but also the Lange Jan in Middelburg and the harbours of Vlissingen and Terneuzen.

  • From your bed, you have a fantastic view of the Westerschelde and the promenade through the four windows.

The Gevangentoren is located on the boulevard in Vlissingen with a breathtaking view of the Western Scheldt. Seagoing vessels literally sail past at a stone's throw and in clear weather you can not only see the skyline of Knokke but also the Lange Jan in Middelburg and the ports of Vlissingen and Terneuzen. That view alone makes a visit to the Gevangentoren doubly worthwhile. And then to think that you can also eat here like a pro and spend the night like a prince.

Starting with the suite: it is located at the top of the tower, furnished for two people and equipped with every possible comfort. From your bed you have a fantastic view of the Western Scheldt and the boulevard through the four windows. On the old ‘battlements’ you can walk all the way around the spire on the outside of the tower and not only enjoy the view but also breathe in the sea air. An overnight stay in the suite can therefore rightly be called a unique experience that you will not easily forget. The breakfast is very extensive and to extend the enjoyment as long as possible, check-out on the day of departure is no later than 12:00.

On the ground floor you will find restaurant De Gevangentoren where you can enjoy both lunch and dinner. The menu offers ever-changing (regional) dishes where ‘pure’ is the key word and the seasons are the guiding principle.

De Gevangentoren is a monument and therefore does not have a lift. This makes the suite unsuitable for people with walking difficulties.

Surroundings

Vlissingen offers a wide range of culture and entertainment in both summer and winter. For example, within walking distance of your suite you can visit the maritime muZEEum, the Kazematten or the statue of Michiel de Ruyter. The beaches offer endless opportunities for walking and getting a breath of fresh air and the boulevard is a great place to stroll.

History

The Westpoort in Vlissingen was built around the year 1491 and consisted of two towers with a gate in between. One tower, called the Gevangentoren, stood on the sea side and the other, an older tower called the Kruittoren, stood on the land side. In 1563, the new Middelburg gate was built and the Westpoort lost its function as a city gate. Almost half a century later, the building was given a new function as a city prison and would remain so until around 1890. In the 1880s, the Vlissingen boulevard slowly took shape and the Gevangentoren was seen as an annoying obstacle that would be best demolished. Fortunately, that never happened. Because look how proud that old tower now stands and how wonderful it is to stay there!

The Vlissingen Prison Tower stands at the mouth of the Westerschelde, one of the busiest shipping lanes. Seagoing vessels sail past you here, literally just a stone’s throw away, so there’s always something to see. A restaurant has been housed in this listed building since 1974. Since 2016, you’ve been able to spend the night in a luxury suite at the top of the Prison Tower.
