In the village of Reitsum, in the North Frisian countryside, stands a small church overlooking the farmland. Whilst this church, built in 1896, once accommodated around 100 Reformed worshippers, it is now a small-scale, luxury boutique hotel complete with a coffee bar. You can stay in one of the five unique church suites, the loft or the studio with a terrace. Although they all differ in décor, view and size, without exception they are furnished with an eye for detail and equipped with every luxury and comfort to ensure a pleasant stay. You’ll sleep in a Royal Deluxe bed by Swiss Sense, enjoy the lovely toiletries from Rituals, benefit from fast, free Wi-Fi and have a Smart TV as standard.
In the morning, you can join the breakfast buffet, which consists entirely of fresh, local produce, and for the best coffee, there’s the on-site coffee bar in the heart of the church, where hotel guests can enjoy a cosy drink after 5 pm. For safety and peace and quiet, children aged 10 and over are welcome. Parking is free, and electric cars can be charged at the on-site charging point. Bicycles can be stored in the shed in the church garden, safely locked away.
Surroundings
In Reitsum, you can really enjoy doing nothing and relaxing. There are supermarkets in Ferwert (5 km), Holwerd (6.5 km) and Burdaard (5 km). In Dokkum, one of the Eleven Cities – just 8 km away – a stroll through the city walls, with their imposing windmills, is well worth a visit. You’ll also want to visit the Bonifatius Chapel, Dokkum Museum, the shops, terraces and restaurants. To help you explore the varied landscape of North-East Friesland, we’ve also selected ten different cycle routes and ten different walking routes for you.
History
The church of yesteryear has been designated by the local council as a ‘distinctive building of cultural and historical value to the region’, and with good reason: it stands proudly in the landscape and is impossible to miss. To transform the church into a boutique hotel, the current owners commissioned an architect. The result is that you’ll want for nothing during your stay, whilst all the historic features can still be admired just as they always have been.
The host
The host
Anco Hoekema and Dorianne Hofker live with their two daughters in the vicarage next to the church. Anco was born and raised in Ternaard, Friesland, and Dorianne is originally from Ameland. They met whilst studying in Leeuwarden and, after various adventures in Friesland and Italy, ended up in Reitsum in 2004. In 2011, Dorianne opened a tableware shop next to the vicarage, followed by the loft and the studio. In 2021, the opportunity arose to buy the church. After years of putting together mood boards, hard work and renovations, the finishing touches were added to the suites and Anco and Dorianne opened their church to guests.
