In De Zwarte Schuur in Scharwoude you will stay in a characteristic, old dike warehouse from 1923 and you can sleep like a dike guard. The very well-insulated building now offers plenty of space and peace for relaxation and is a perfect base for people who love nature, heritage & culture and being outdoors.
This heritage gem offers space for up to six guests as a holiday home, is located on the Westfriese Omringdijk and is oriented towards the dike at the front.
On the first floor there is a large open space with a lounge area, a desk and a view over the Markermeer. You will also find a spacious master bedroom, two king-size box beds and a bathroom here. Downstairs, at the front of the building, there is a lovely kitchen with all the trimmings and at the back, a cozy living area with chairs around a pellet stove.
Surroundings
The dike warehouse is located on the Markermeer coast near the Zuiderzee city of Hoorn. This region is characterized by the dikes, mills, pumping stations, polders and reclaimed lands that together symbolize Dutch water management and the battle against the water. The beautiful city of Hoorn with its new city beach is a stone's throw away. The Unesco World Heritage polder De Beemster and other nice Zuiderzee towns such as Edam-Volendam, Monnickendam, Marken and cheese city Alkmaar are also close by. Just like the Zuiderzee Museum, the drowned village of Etersheim, and hiking areas such as De Hulk and beautiful North Holland villages such as De Rijp. A new nature reserve with hiking and cycling paths over the new bank dike between Edam-Volendam and Hoorn starts right outside the door. Nature, culture and water lovers, hikers and cyclists can indulge themselves here.
History
More than a century ago, this was a storage place and shelter for the dike guards who had to guard the dike. Today, it is a unique water heritage that deserves to be cherished. The dike warehouse was restored in collaboration with an architectural firm - and with respect for the history of the building - in a sustainable, circular way with mainly biobased and locally found materials. At the same time, it was - although almost invisible! - equipped with all kinds of modern comfort and facilities. The interior has been designed with great care. Old materials and material applications were the source of inspiration and ensured that the mysterious atmosphere of yesteryear was preserved.

Culture Matters is the organiser of the DIJK project – of which De Zwarte Schuur is also a part. The aim is to help ensure that the landscape surrounding the dyke warehouses – in other words, the IJsselmeer coast – is admired and respected. That certainly isn’t a problem at the West Frisian Omringdijk, where you’re staying.
