Tobacco was grown on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug until the mid-20th century. The Napoleonic Barn (which was indeed built by Louis Napoleon) was therefore originally intended as a tobacco exchange – a place where tobacco was traded. However, the barn was soon used to quarter French soldiers. In 2018, restoration work took place, during which the first floor was transformed into a designer hotel with a library.
